When TinyPNG is the right tool
TinyPNG (and TinyJPG) earned the category. If you are happy uploading marketing assets and the files are under 5 MB, their results are often superb. This page is not a smear — it is for the jobs they are not built for.
When you need an alternative
Client photos, unpublished work, ID-adjacent scans, and anything over 5 MB should not go to an upload compressor. ImageOptimizer runs locally. There is no TinyPNG-style 5 MB cap, no daily credit, and no watermark added. Compress, convert, hit an exact size, or strip metadata with the same engine.
Honest tradeoff
A cloud encoder can beat a browser canvas on some PNGs. If maximum PNG crush is the only goal and the files are public-safe, TinyPNG is still a fine choice. If the headline is no upload / no limits, use Compress or Compress PNG.
Frequently asked questions
TinyPNG’s encoder is excellent, especially for PNG. We are the alternative when you cannot upload, hit the 5 MB wall, or need convert / Gemini watermark / exact KB in the same toolkit.
No. Compression runs in the browser with Canvas. Close the tab and the files are gone.
Yes — dedicated Compress PNG, or convert PNG to WebP when you want much smaller files with transparency.
